BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team exploded for four, third period goals to break a 2-2 tie and give the Royals their second consecutive home victory in their final home game of the season. Bethel scored twice in the first period while Gustavus scored twice in the second before the Royals scored the final four goals of the game, all in the third. Playing in his final home game as a Royal,
Brock Raffaele had four points on two goals and two assists for Bethel.
Bethel's leading scorer,
Mitch Hughes, scored the first goal of the game 4:51 into the first period with assists to Raffaele and
Travis Payne. At 12:14 in the first, Payne then scored one of his own with Raffaele assisting again. Gustavus got on the board at 5:55 in the second period before adding another goal on a power play ten minutes later. Blake Schammel scored both Gustavus goals. The game remained 2-2 heading into the third period.
JT Walters then broke the tie just 1:38 into the third with senior
EJ Gann assisting.
Justin Bonanno scored for Bethel one minute later with
Al Nejmeh assisting. The Royals hot streak continued as just four minutes later they scored again. Raffaele's unassisted goal made it 5-2 with just 13:25 remaining in the game. Raffaele added one more score with just over three minutes remaining for the 6-2 final. Payne and Hughes assisted. The four goal period was the most the Royals had scored in a single period all season.
Matt Rowe won his second consecutive start, making 28 saves. Bethel outshot Gustavus 32-30. Gustavus was 1-3 on the power play while Bethel was just 0-2 despite getting off six shots during the two power plays.
The Royals will now wrap up the season with the final game on the road Saturday night in St. Peter, Minnesota. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. from the Don Roberts Ice Rink on the campus of Gustavus.
