STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Bethel University men's hockey team showed incredible fight tonight at the No. 2 ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as they battled back twice but in the end lost on an overtime goal with just 42 seconds remaining. The Pointers took an early 2- 0 lead before Bethel responded with a pair of goals of their own in the second period to tie it up 2-2. UWSP then took the lead back at 3-2 but Bethel responded again to tie the game and send it into overtime. It appeared the game was headed towards a draw when a scrum in front of the net resulted in the puck finding its way into the Bethel net for the game winner in the final minute.
UWSP scored their two first period goals within less than a minute of each other midway through the frame. The Royals then returned the favor with two goals of their own just 45 seconds apart in the early portion of the second period.
Jackson Purvis was able to get a mini break-away and dropped the puck back to
Peter Barral who buried the shot for the first Royals goal. The next Royals score was a pretty connection in front of the net that was finished by Justin Bonnano from
Dylan Webster and
Mitch Hughes. The game would stay tied until the Pointers took the lead back at 4:06 into the third period. Bethel responded at 12:49 when
Travis Payne tipped in a Mike Bond shot. The fateful overtime goal came on a UWSP power play with just 42 seconds remaining to send the Royals to a crushing defeat.
The Royals were able to fend off the first seven UWSP power plays before the Pointers scored on their eigth opportunity. Bethel was 0-4 in their power play chances on the night. Bethel got a great effort in net from
Jesse Garcia who made 36 saves against the Pointers who entered the game averaging seven goals per game as they improved to 4-0. The loss drops the Royals to 0-3-1 as they will come into Bethel University Arena for the first time next Friday night to host Saint Mary's University in the MIAC opener for both teams.
