MEQUON, Wis.—The Bethel University men's hockey team fell just short of victory to the Concordia University-Wisconsin Falcons by a score of 2-1 in game two of the annual Thanksgiving showdown, after the Falcons found the back of the net with just 28 seconds left. For the third time, the Thanksgiving Cup will stay with the Falcons.
After a scoreless first period, the Royals struck first for the third consecutive game this season. For the second night in a row, freshman George Splichal got the Royals rolling with the power play goal 2:59 into the second period, his 4th goal of the year. Tony Larson and Mike Bond both received assists. Freshman goaltender Tucker Murphy, who finished with 34 saves, played stellar in net, shutting out the Falcons for the first 28:05 minutes of the game, however the Falcons finally got on the board 11:55 into the second period when forward Adam Ritchie put the puck past Murphy during a scrum in front of the net. Nick Erb and Adam Fauchoux were credited with the assists. The Royals and Falcons were both held scoreless until defenseman Eli Riddle scored from the point on the power play with 28 seconds left in regulation, lifting the Falcons to victory and securing their third consecutive Thanksgiving Cup .
Bethel heads into break with 1-8-1 record. Five of the eight losses have been one goal games for the fighting Royals. The Royals will continue to practice throughout December, but will not resume games until January 8th, where they will take on the Augsburg College Auggies at Ed Saugestad Rink. The puck will drop at 7:05.
