BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team took a 3-1 lead early in the second period over No. 9 ranked Adrian College but the Bulldogs responded with six unanswered goals to take a 7-3 victory. Adrian scored their final six goals in the final 24 minutes of the game to stun the Royals and their home crowd in the first game of 2015.
Bethel jumped out to an early lead with a power play goal by
Tony Larson at 10:35 in the first period.
Brock Raffaele and
Jackson Purvis assisted Larson as he rifled one in from near the blue line. Adrian was able to tie the game at 2:50 in the second period before the Royals answered right back with a pair of goals just a minute a part. At 4:54
Justin Bonanno and Zach Erickson executed a great two-on-one break to take back the lead.
Brock Raffaele then scored a beautiful goal after being set up by
Jackson Purvis on another two-on-one break with
Mitch Hughes also assisting. Adrian pulled their starting goalie following Raffaeles score as Bethel had converted three of their six total shots into goals. The Royals would hang on to their 3-1 lead for over ten and a half minutes before Adrian scored two quick goals near the end of the second period to tie it back up and take some momentum into the locker room. The first Adrian goal during the stretch was scored short-handed.
The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game with a power play goal at 6:18 in the third period. They then tacked on two more quick goals at 7:04 and 9:36 to take a commanding 6-3 lead. Their final score came with just under five minutes remaining.
Will Griswold made 30 saves for Bethel. The Royals were 1-4 on power play opportunities while Adrian was 1-3.
Bethel will now welcome in No. 17 ranked Lake Forest College for a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m. The game will take place in Bethel University Arena and live stats and video can be found
