WINONA, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team fell on the road to Saint Mary's University by a 5-2 final score. The Royals pulled within 3-2 in the third period but were unable to score again and SMU scored twice in the final 70 seconds to seal it. Both Bethel goals came on power plays with freshman
JT Walters and
Jackson Purvis scoring.
The Cardinals scored the games first goal 7:05 into the first period with Bethel answering back two minutes later.
JT Walters scored the Royals goal, on a power play, with assists to
Eric Szafranski and
Michael Chuinard. SMU scored again in the first period, at 16:08 to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The Cardinals extended their lead to 3-1 with the lone goal for either team in the second period at 7:51. Seven and a half minutes into the third period, Purvis scored on another power play from
Brock Raffaele and
Tony Larson to pull the Royals to within one. Bethel was unable to get any closer however, and SMU scored with 70 seconds and again with just 6 seconds remaining in the game.
Will Griswold made the start in net for Bethel and made 30 saves as the Cardinals outshot the Royals 35-25. Bethel is still in search of their first win in conference play, falling to 2-11-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the MIAC. Saint Mary's is now 6-6-2 and picked up their first MIAC win, improving to 1-2-2.
