Close Doubles Defeats Lead to 8-1 Loss to Carleton

Results

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's tennis team fell to Carleton College by a 8-1 score Friday night at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness. The Royals lost a pair of extremely close matches in doubles play and were able to come out on top in just one singles match despite playing several close matches. Freshman Matt Schull improved his overall record to 5-1 on the season at No. 1 singles as he once again took down a top line competitor, 6-4, 6-0.

"It was all about the doubles matches tonight," said Bethel head coach Drew Fernelius. "We were ahead in both second and third doubles and lost both. They were extremely close and we could have won both of those which would have made it a totally different story going into singles play."

Kolin Kiekhoefer and Luke Palmquist both fell by scores of 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles in tightly contested matches. At No. 5 singles senior Steve Schull was down 3-0 in the second set after losing the opening set 6-0, before coming back to win the second set 6-3. Unfortunately, Schull would fall 10-4 in the third set tie-break. Kent Schaller lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles while senior Kirby Ronning fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

"The guys rebounded as best they could but Carleton was just too deep and talented," coach Fernelius said.

Bethel falls to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC. The Royals will next take on the top team in the MIAC, Gustavus Adolphus College, next Saturday at 9 a.m., in St. Peter, Minn.
