BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team used a steady attacking offense along with outstanding defense and goaltending to take a 4-0 victory over Hamline University. The Royals put 28 shots on goal, and converted four, while freshman
Maggie Straka stopped all 19 Hamline shots. Freshman
Natalie Simons scored a pair of power play goals for Bethel.
The Royals got on the board first when
Kathryn Larson intercepted a Hamline pass and quickly scored at 12:36 in the first period. Simons first power play goal came later in the period, at 18:24. She was assisted by
Karly Vohden and
Kalie Johnson. At 12:04 in the second period Simons scored again on the power play, with an assist from
Wendy Roberts.
Beth Tangen capped the scoring in the game with her first collegiate goal at 3:20 in the third period.
Jessica Gapinski and Kill Larson assisted Tangen.
The Royals, who had been struggling on the power play thus far, scored twice in six opportunities while Hamline was 0-4 and is now 0-20 on the season. The Royals improved to 6-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the MIAC, while Hamline fell to 0-6-1 and 0-5-1 in MIAC play.
Bethel will wrap up the first semester action next Saturday when they travel to Alexandria, Minnesota to take on Concordia-Moorhead. The game will start at 2 p.m. in the Runestone Community Center.
