Power Outage Can't Stop Royals from Routing Chapman in California

ORANGE, Calif.—As if Monday night's dramatic finish wasn't enough to make lasting memories for the Bethel University women's basketball team in California this week, Tuesday's contest provided another unforgettable moment.

What was scheduled to be an 8:30 p.m. tipoff against Chapman University didn't take place until after 10 p.m., as a power outage in Orange, CA kept the two foes off the hardwood for over an hour and a half.

Starting at what felt like midnight (central time) for the Bethel University squad wasn't enough to slow the Royals, however, as BU came out of the gates swinging. Bethel amassed a 38-17 lead in the first 20 minutes and never looked back. The Royals shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the opening frame, while holding the opposing Panthers to six field goals on 17 percent shooting.

The second half featured more of the same, as the BU continued their best shooting performance of the season with a 54.2 percent effort in the final 20 minutes. In all, Bethel finished the game shooting 54.3 percent from the floor and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from long range.

The Royals' hot shooting from downtown was led by Monday night's star Sydney Schultz. Schultz, who buried the game winning 3-pointer to give Bethel a 55-52 victory over the University of Redlands 24 hours earlier, finished Tuesday's nonconference affair 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. She and Rachel Parupsky, who was 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the foul line, finished with a team-high 13 points. Schultz added three assists to her stat sheet, while Parupsky hauled down seven rebounds and swatted three Chapman shots.

Three other players on the BU roster finished the contest in double figures. Among them was Shanni Moorse, Angie Kirchoff, and Kalli Zimmermann. Moorse, who boarded four shots and assisted three more, along with Angie Kirchoff, who swiped three steals, each finished with 12 points. Zimmermann added 10 points and seven rebounds. Lindy Parker led all players with 12 rebounds.

With Tuesday night's triumph over Chapman, the Royals complete the trip to Southern California without a blemish. Now 8-2 overall, Bethel jumps back into conference action with a road test against Saint Benedict at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 3.
