Concordia Takes Thanksgiving Cup with 3-1 Victory

BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team fell 3-1 at home on Saturday afternoon to Concordia University-Wisconsin as the Falcons retain the second annual Thanksgiving Cup. After the two teams lit it up for a combined 11 goals and 74 shots on Friday night, Saturday was much different with just the four goals and 60 shots. Bethel outshot the Falcons 33-27 but were able to score just once. Travis Payne scored his fourth goal of the series against his former school for Bethel.

Concordia wasted little time in grabbing an early lead as they scored just 41 seconds into the game when Devin Stuermer was able to bang one in through the pads of Bethel goalie Matt Rowe. Neither team scored again in the first period or second period. Payne scored his goal for Bethel on a power play at 4:43 in the third period to tie the game up. The Falcons took the lead back just over a minute later with a goal that was discussed at length by the officials on whether or not it was kicked in. The Falcons added an insurance goal mid-way through the period on a power play for the 3-1 final.

For the game Bethel had five power plays but was only able to score once on nine total shots. CUW converted on one of their three power plays. Matt Rowe made 24 saves for Bethel.

Bethel will return to the ice next weekend for the final series of 2014 when they take on Hamline University. The Royals and Pipers will face-off Friday night at 7 p.m. in Bethel University Arena and Saturday at Oscar Johnson Arena at 7 p.m.
