Block Party Against the Flacons Bolsters Bethel's Unbeaten Record

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.— It was another sensational night for the Bethel University defense, as the Royals forced 25 turnovers throughout the contest and posted an incredible 14 team blocks throughout the contest, leading to a 60-54 victory over UW-River Falls. In addition to the block party inside, BU was able to swipe 17 steals throughout the night, which created a 12-4 margin in fast-break points.

Kalli Zimmermann, who had a spectacular night, opened the first half with three And-1 plays, while Lexi Friesen came off the bench to score six points on 3-of-6 shooting. Bethel's press and a 2-3 zone in the final five minutes led to several Falcon turnovers and great opportunities for the Royals.

The second half consisted of more of the same. Numerous blocks and steals defensively created a gap for BU, as they went ahead by 14 with 8:23 remaining in the game. UW-River Falls was able to decrease Bethel's lead to six in the final minute, but never came within striking distance down the stretch.

The Royals' 14 swats throughout the nonconference affair ranks No. 2 all-time in a single game, as BU posted 15 blocks against Carleton College in 1980. Zimmermann and Rachel Parupsky combined for 12 of the team's 14, while Zimmermann, Kailey Eid, and Lindy Parker tallied 13 of the squad's 17 steals.

Kalli Zimmermann ended the competition with 13 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals, six blocks, and three assists in 32 minutes of play. Rachel Parupsky also stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, eight rebounds, six blocks, and two steals. In addition, Hannah Niewald was able to finish in double figures after being sent to the charity stripe five times in the final minute.

Bethel's bench played a large role in Tuesday's matchup, as BU was able to outscore the Falcons 19-8 in bench points. Angie Kirchoff added seven points off the bench, while Lexi Friesen and Lindy Parker collectively poured in 10.

The Royals are now 3-0, which marks the second consecutive year that Bethel has begun its season undefeated through the first three games. BU will now begin conference play when they travel to St. Catherine next Wednesday, December 3 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
