Road Trip to Moorhead Results in Split Against Cobbers

Royals win the opener, but fall to Concordia 2-5 in second game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MOORHEAD, Minn.—Coming off a victory over the No. 2-ranked Tommies Sunday afternoon, the Bethel University baseball team tried to continue its momentum in Monday's matinee against Concordia College. The Royals (22-13, 9-9 MIAC) claimed its second consecutive 2-0 victory in the series opener, but a four-run inning in the second tilt led to a 2-5 loss against the Cobbers (13-13, 7-7 MIAC). With Monday's series split, the Royals find themselves in a six-way tie for third place among all conference standings.

Freshman starter Sean Glenn was dynamic in the first contest against the Cobbers, as the Waukee, Iowa, native surrendered three hits and zero walks in the complete-game shutout. Glenn struck out five while improving to 2-1 on the hill throughout the 2013 campaign.

The Royals bats got after Concordia early, but quieted down the stretch. Six hits led to one run in the first inning followed by one in the second. Matt Rowley drove in David Freed in the first frame before David Freed walked in the second inning to drive in Bethel's second and final run of the game. Six different batters tallied a hit and BU collectively drew six walks—including Grant Anderson, who went 0-for-1 with two walks.

David Freed got the nod in game two and pitched well until a two-run triple gave the Cobbs the lead in the fourth inning. Freed ended his outing with three strikeouts and one walk in four innings pitched. Chris Hall did his best to control the damage in relief, but the Royals only mustered one run after a four-run fourth for Concordia.

13 Bethel players saw action at the plate in the second seven-inning affair, as the Royals mustered just five hits and one walk in the game. Luke Schultz finished 1-for-2 with a walk, while Matt Rowley and Grady Rolando each had an RBI. The Cobbers Rose went the distance in the complete-game effort.

BU's final conference double header of the 2013 regular season against Augsburg College has been rescheduled to Hargis Park at 2:30 p.m. What was originally scheduled to be played at Parade Stadium, Tuesday's game will play a big part in determining final standings in the MIAC. Live stats and webcast will both be available here.
