Men's Tennis Finishes Season with 7-2 Win Over Concordia

Royals seniors Tucker Morris and Reggie Ronning won their 10th doubles match of the season

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Bethel University men's tennis team finished the 2013 season in style with a 7-2 victory over Concordia College Saturday afternoon. Seniors Tucker Morris and Reggie Ronning ended their excellent careers with a win at No. 1 doubles and in No. 1 and No. 2 singles play. The win was the third of the MIAC season for Bethel, leaving them just out of the playoffs.

“It was exciting to end the season with two big wins,” said head coach Drew Fernelius. “I'm so proud of the guys on a good season. We just barely missed the playoffs.”

Morris and Ronning won their final No. 1 doubles match 8-6, giving them an overall season record of 10-4 and 5-3 in MIAC play. They continued their solid play with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles for Morris and a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles for Ronning. It was the fifth win in a row for Ronning, improving his record in MIAC play to 7-2. Morris won 10 singles matches and 10 doubles matches on the season at the No. 1 spot.

“Tucker and Reggie had amazing seasons,” coach Fernelius said. “We are really going to miss them, both on and off the court.”

Steve Schull won his third match in a row at No. 3 singles and also pulled out a 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles with Brett Lizotte. Schull and Lizotte finished 4-2 in MIAC play and 5-4 overall.
“Steve finished the year on a nice streak,” said coach Fernelius. “We are going to count on him big time next year.”

At No. 4 singles, Kirby Ronning won his first career MIAC match 1-6, 6-3, 10-5. David Leafblad won his final career match at No. 6 singles 8-4. Luke Palmquist was the lone Royal to fall in singles play at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2. Palmquist and Leafblad fell at No. 2 doubles 8-5.

The win leaves the Royals with a final MIAC record of 3-6 and 6-11 overall.
