Men’s Tennis Loses 9-0, Win’s 9-0

The Royals fell to Gustavus but rebounded with a dominate victory over Bethany Lutheran in a Saturday double header

FRIDLEY, Minn. – The Bethel University men's tennis team found themselves on both sides of 9-0 scores Saturday afternoon at the Fridley Lifetime Fitness Center. The Royals fell to MIAC leader Gustavus before cruising to a victory over Bethany Lutheran in a non-conference tilt.

“Gustavus was definitely the best team we have played all year,” Royals coach Drew Fernelius said. “I was proud of the way we competed. Tucker, Reggie and Steve all had one really good set at No. 1-3 singles and Luke had a great match at No. 5 singles and played really good. I am excited with the direction we are going. A couple months ago I think they would have beaten us much worse.”

The Royals No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles players all lost by 4-6 and 6-1 scores in various orders, but were competitive against the Gusties who are undefeated in MIAC play and 12-3 overall. Luke Palmquist dropped a pair of very closely contested sets at No. 5 singles, 6-7 (5), 4-6. The No. 1 doubles team of Tucker Morris/Reggie Ronning and No. 3 doubles team of Kirby Ronning/Luke Palmquist both played competitive matches but fell 8-4.

Immediately following their defeat against Gustavus, Bethel took on Bethany Lutheran and were in complete control throughout. The three doubles teams did not lose a single point, winning 8-0 across the board. Steve Schull at No. 2 singles also did not lose a point, winning 6-0, 6-0. No Royals surrendered more than two points during the match.

“We dominated all the way through and rebounded really well after the loss,” coach Fernelius said. “We are looking forward to hopefully getting outside soon for some matches.”

Bethel is scheduled to host their first match of the year Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Saint Mary's University at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
