Day four milestones
Off to the races…
The 2013 outdoor track and field season officially began Saturday, as the Royals took part in the Point Loma Nazarene University Collegiate Open in San Diego. Bethel competed against eight other institutions, including Navy, Point Loma Nazarene, and Cal State San Bernadino.
Rachel Kalk was one of the strongest competitors for the women—taking part in the 200-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 4x100-meter relay, and the triple jump. Kalk took first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.13 meters (36.516 feet). Several men finished with high marks as well, including
Zach Haskins,
Matt Berens, and
Rob LeMay. Haskins, who was just recently crowned an Indoor Track and Field NCAA Division III All-American took first place in the 1500-meter run and helped the Royals 4x400-meter relay team to a time of 3:35.00.
Matt Berens finished second behind Haskins in the 1500 with a time of 3:58.09, and captured first place in the 3000-meter run with an overall time of 8:51.29. Meanwhile,
Rob LeMay took second in the 400-meter dash—0.70 seconds behind the competitor from Navy—with a final time of 49.79.
Softball slams St. Scholastica before falling by slim margin to Babson…
The Bethel University softball team recorded its second consecutive five-inning shutout with a 13-0 win over St. Scholastica Saturday in Clermont, Fla. The Royals got two early home runs from
Caroline Kivisto that drove in four of her total seven RBI in the game, while pitcher
Karli Persson struck out four and allowed zero runs, three walks, and two hits in five innings. Other key contributors included
Rachel Gilbert—who hit her second home run in as many days—and
Kalyn Sorensen—who went 2-for-2 with an RBI and four runs scored. BU couldn't continue its winning stretch that saw the fastpitch squad win eight of its last nine games, though, as Babson defeated the Royals 5-4 in seven innings.
Fatigue sets in for Bethel baseball …
Despite competing in eight games in Florida, Bethel will leave knowing it still has things to work on, as the Royals dropped a pair of games to the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford. BU fell to the Panthers 6-3 in game one and couldn't hold on to an early 4-0 lead in game two, as Pitt-Bradford came back to win 5-4 in the final frame. Bethel allowed just one run in the final game and
Mike Schultz finished 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, but it wasn't enough.
David Freed drove in all three runs in game one—going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Jet lag…
Instead of lagging shots on a par five at a specific golf course, Bethel University's men's golf team may be experiencing jet lag, as they traveled back from San Diego, California Saturday. Their return follows six busy days that took the Royals to Salt Creek Golf Course, Crossings at Carlsbad, Woods Valley Golf Club, Mount Woodson Golf Course, and Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Tennis enjoys off day…
The Royals men's and women's tennis teams enjoyed Saturday as an off day from competition, after playing against two different opponents Friday. Bethel enjoyed its time by visiting the beach and playing an intra-squad mixed doubles tournament. Each doubles team picture can be seen
here.
Daily temps…
Highs in Florida were in the high 70's Saturday, while San Diego, California experienced low 60's—a bit chilly, but pleasant for running conditions. The Royals will want to hold the warm feeling close to their heart, however, as each will return to a snowy, wet Minnesota climate tomorrow.
