BLAINE, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team opened up their season in the MIAC Hockey Showcase event at Fogerty Arena in Blaine and fell by a 2-1 score to Gustavus Adolphus College. The Gusties scored both of their goals in a minute and a half span in the middle of the second period. Sophomore
Mitch Hughes picked up where he left off last season when he tied for the MIAC scoring lead as he scored Bethels lone goal of the night. Hughes goal came at the 5:47 mark of the third period and he was assisted by
Brock Raffaele on a Bethel power play.
The Gusties first goal came on a power play at 8:50 in the second period. Just 90 seconds later Gustavus scored an even strength goal to take the 2-0 lead. A slashing penalty on Gustavus put the Royals on the power play in the third period when Hughes was able to capitalize for the Royals. In all the Gusties, who are the second team in the receiving votes category of the USCHO.com Top 15 poll, were called for eight penalties but the Royals were unable to take advantage. Bethel was whistled five times and were outshot 22-34.
Steven Bolton made 30 saves in the net for Bethel.
The Royals will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on the University of St. Thomas in their final game of the MIAC Hockey Showcase. The puck will drop at 4:30 p.m. at Fogerty Arena.
