Royals Get Back in Win Column with 7-4 Victory at St. Olaf

Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel University women's hockey team defeated St. Olaf College 7-4 on the road Saturday night, snapping their four-game losing streak and the Oles five-game winning streak. Caroline Kivisto scored two goals and added two assists for the Royals, who scored four unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 early in the first period. The win moves the Royals into a tie for fifth place with the Oles at 4-3-1 in MIAC play.
 
Just 1:46 into the first period the Royals found themselves behind after Nicole Stumpf scored her 14th goal of the season for St. Olaf. Ten minutes later Cristina Masten tied the game up for Bethel with her ninth goal. Kelsey Johnston scored her first goal of the season five minutes later to give the Royals a 2-1 lead before Kivisto's first goal of the game, and fourth of the season, stretched the lead to 3-1 with a minute left in the period.
 
The Royals wasted little time before adding to their lead in the second period when Charise Kendrick scored two minutes in. The Oles were able to cut the lead to 4-2 when Margot Fleming scored just over a minute later. Kivisto scored her second goal 10 minutes later which proved to be the game winner for the Royals. St. Olaf scored 7:23 into the third period to pull within 5-3 and the Oles began pulling their goalie, allowing Bethel and Biz Huss to score their first empty net goal with nearly eight minutes remaining in the contest and get the Royals back up by three. The extra skater advantage allowed the Oles to score once more with 1:33 left in the game but Kalie Johnson added another empty netter with 44 seconds remaining for the final 7-4 margin.
 
Jess Newstrom returned to the net for the Royals and made 24 saves to record her fifth win of the season. The Royals outshot St. Olaf 36-28 and were converted on one of their four power play opportunities. Bethel was called for just one penalty in the contest.
 
Bethel will travel to play St. Catherine's Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. in a contest that was changed from its original date on Friday. Saturday the Royals will host the Wildcats at the Bethel University Arena at 3 p.m.
