BOX SCORE: GAME ONE
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Bethel University baseball fans endured quite the showdown Wednesday afternoon at Hargis Park, as the Royals defeated Carleton College 4-3 in game one, however, it took thirteen innings to complete the victory. Due to the length of time game one took, game two was unable to be completed as BU holds a 7-6 lead after three innings. Wednesday's game two will resume at 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The Royals surrendered an unearned run early, as the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Bethel responded with a three-run effort in the bottom of the third, however, to go ahead 3-1 after three innings played.
David Freed (Jr., North Oaks, Minn.) led off the inning with a single and
Travis Piepho (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) followed with a liner to the second baseman that he booted, making it first and third nobody out.
Matt Rowley (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) then recorded his 33 RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Jay Slick (Sr., River Falls, Wis.) then singled to left and advanced to second, as Carleton attempted to throw out Piepho at third. With runners on second and third,
Mike Sedjo (Sr., West Chicago, Ill.) then singled through the left side and scored Piepho.
Jesse Nickols (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) capped off the three-run inning with a sac fly to right field.
David Anderson (Sr., Willmar, Minn.) started the game and lasted four innings, giving up one run in the fifth before the senior hurler exited the first contest. Anderson finished his outing with four hits allowed and three walks, but struck out two.
Buddy Flaherty (Sr., Victoria, Minn.) then was asked to pitch four innings of relief, in which he allowed an earned run late in the seventh that tied the game for the Knights. Flaherty struck out one and walked two in the four-inning effort.
Matt Rowley then came in to pitch an additional four innings, where he allowed no runs and two hits, but struck out two.
David Freed then came in for the game's final inning, and allowed three hits, but a critical inning-ending double-play made Freed the winning pitcher.
In the bottom of the thirteenth
Luke Schultz (So., Forest Lake, Minn.) led off the inning with a walk and
Matt Rowley reached on a fielder's choice, causing Schultz to be thrown out at second.
Jay Slick was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and it was
Nik Anderson (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn.), who came up with the clutch double down the left field line that scored Rowley from second.
Game two started exceptionally late, however, the two teams managed to get three innings in. The Royals took an early 5-1 lead, however, a five-run inning for the Knights and a two-run effort from BU in the third changed the score to be 7-6. Play was called at the end of three due to the lack of lighting and potential weather coming in. Wednesday's game two will resume, however, Thursday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. Live stats and webcast will be available.
