Day number four started out incredibly well, as the men's and women's tennis squads both collected a win in their first appearance under the Florida sun. Bethel faced CUNY in a men's and women's dual at the Oak Street Courts, where the women swept the Dolphins 9-0 followed by an 8-1 throttle in the men's competition.
Each athlete in the women's competition was victorious, as each doubles duo won with final match scores of 8-5, 8-2, and 8-0. The singles matches followed suit, as each women's player defeated their opponent in two sets, except for a three-set match for the No. 2 player
Steph Brown (Jr., Lake City, Minn.).
The men were nearly just as dominant, however, the No. 1 doubles combo suffered a 4-8 loss.
Kent Nichols (Sr., Zimmerman, Minn.) and
Reggie Ronning (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.) struck back in their singles competition, though defeating each of their opponents handily in two sets.
Bryce Johnson (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) outlasted his challenger in a tiebreaking third set that lasted until Johnson captured the 16-14 advantage.
The win gives the Royal's men's unit its first win of the season, after falling in heartbreaking matches in recent meets. The women now improve to .500, as the 9-0 stomp puts BU at 3-3 on the season.
In Clermont, Fla. the softball team rode the waves of yesterday's victory in game two and the early tennis results, handing Washington & Jefferson a 7-5 loss. The win gives the Royals its first win-streak of the early season, as BU racked up seven hits in the morning showcase.
Megan Matson (Jr., Mound, Minn.),
Rachel Gilbert (Jr., Becker, Minn.), and Alexandra Thunburg (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) brought their bats again as the trio combined for six RBI's in the 6.5 inning affair. Gilbert was sensational at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs batted in.
Anja Erlandson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) went another seven strong innings to record her second straight complete game victory in as many games. Erlandson struck out three and walked zero batters in her seven innings pitched.
Bethel didn't fare as well in game two of its Monday double-header, falling to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 8-2. Despite outhitting the Blugolds 9-8, BU was unable to plate as many runs and allowed six earned runs in the defeat.
Genna Bock (Sr., Circle Pines, Minn.) got the nod to start the game and surrendered four earned runs, while striking out two.
At the plate
Angie Jackson (Fr., Oakdale, Minn.), Kaylen Sorensen (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.), and
Logan Ahlness (So., Hanska, Minn.) each recorded two hits in three plate appearances.
Rachel Gilbert and Sorensen were the only to Bethel batters to drive in a run in the contest.
With the loss Bethel drops to 3-4 on the season and prepares for another two-game day Tuesday, as the Royals take on Union College at 9 a.m. and Luther College at 1 p.m.
The baseball team also endured a set back Monday afternoon when losing to the College of Wooster 8-3 in a nine-inning competition. A couple early mishaps allowed the Fighting Scots to go up early, and despite a minor Bethel comeback in the top of the third inning, Wooster added several more runs throughout the game to secure the victory.
Matt Rowley (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) started the game for the Royals, giving up two earned runs in six innings pitched while striking out five and walking one.
Austin Hanson (Jr., Mounds View, Minn.) then came in for the final two innings of the afternoon matinee.
Bethel recorded seven hits in the game by seven different batters.
Travis Piepho (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Jesse Nickols (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) each plated an RBI on their lone hit, and both Nickols and
Jay Slick (Sr., River Falls, Minn.) were able to cross home plate.
The Royals fall to 5-5 after the nonconference loss. Tomorrow BU will face the Minnesota Twins rookie team in an exhibition-like showcase that is set to take place at 1 p.m. Fans coming to the game are welcomed to a reception held after the nine-inning game finishes.
The JV baseball team competed in its first contest of the season and finished the affair with an 8-3 victory over Lawrence University.
Grady Rolando (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) and
Aaron Willson (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.) helped secure the victory from the pitching mound, while a host of BU batters contributed to the 8-spot
