BLAINE, Minn. – Bethel University's men's hockey squad fell at the hands of the University of St. Thomas Saturday night in a 5-1 escapade on home ice. The Royals allowed one goal in the first and another early in the second, and after trying to cut into the lead with its only goal of the night half way through the second period, UST added two more goals to clinch the weekend sweep.
BU's only goal of the night came with both teams at full strength when
Chris Fiala (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) put an imprint of his hockey stick on the puck when it laced through the net on a
Jake Irey (Jr., Waterloo, Iowa) and
Tyler Swanson (Fr., Fargo, N.D.) assist.
St. Thomas muscled five goals, however, in Saturday evening's showcase.
Robby Brown (Fr., Battleboro, Vt.) got the start and hindered 28 UST shots, but he and the BU defense were unable to keep the high-powered Tommie offense off the board.
Fiala led the Royals in shots fired with six total, while junior
Jack Paul (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn) tallied five.
Bethel has yet to capture a victory in its last five games and is down to two more weekends of regular season play with a double header next weekend against Augsburg, followed by another double-dip the following weekend to Saint John's. As it stands now Bethel would not make the postseason, although they are one point out of playoff contention.
