ST. Peter, Minn. – Bethel University's men's tennis team opened up its 2012 campaign with its first event of the year against Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Saturday afternoon. The Royals played several competitive matches, but fell to the Gusties in the end 8-1.
In the doubles category each BU two-some was defeated 8-2.
Kent Nichols and
Reggie Ronning led the pairs in the No. 1 match, while
Tucker Morris and
Steven Schull were the No. 2, and
Bryce Johnson and
Kirby Ronning were the No. 3 teams.
Each player attempted to rebound in the singles competition, however, it was just
Kent Nichols who was able to compose a 6-0, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 competition. In the No. 1 matchup
Tucker Morris fell 6-0, 6-4, while
Reggie Ronning was defeated 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 contest.
Bryce Johnson and
Kirby Ronning were unable to put many points together in the No. 4 and No. 6 competition as Johnson fell 6-1, 6-1 and Ronning 6-0,6-0. Yet
Steven Schull was nearly able to hang with the GAC No. 5 player in the opening set, managing a 6-4 outcome, but fell 6-0 in the second.
The Gustavus victory starts the Royals with a sour taste to the season, but Bethel will have a great opportunity to regain its composure as it travels to St. Cloud, Minn. next weekend to take on the St. Cloud State University Huskies. GAC, however, improves to 4-2 in the early season.
