Box Score BLAINE, Minn. – The #3 ranked Gustavus Adolphus Gusties completed a sweep in the opening series of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 victory over the #10 Bethel University Royals women's hockey team Saturday afternoon. The Royals had their chances in the game but were not able to capitalize while the Gusties scored once each in the first and second period. Gustavus outshot the Royals 30-29 for the game but Bethel outshot Gustavus 12-7 in the third period as the Royals had several close calls in an attempt to get on the scoreboard.
The Royals had several good scoring opportunities late in the third period and had three clean breakaways spread throughout the game. Near the end of the first period the Royals very nearly tied the game at one all, three different times within the last 35 seconds. The Royal attack started when
Lindsay Burman (Jr., Stanchfield, Minn.) had a shot clang off the pipe.
Caroline Kivisto (Fr., Dassel, Minn.) then fired a shot in close that was gloved by Gustavus goalie Colleen Jacoby with 15 seconds left. With 8 seconds remaining the Royals scored but the goal was waived off because of a player in the crease.
Jess Newstrom (Sr., Cambridge, Minn.) was solid in the goal for Bethel as she recorded 28 saves.
Bethel will look to rebound next weekend on the road against Concordia, who the Royals defeated 4-1 last Saturday in a non-conference matchup. The Cobbers were ranked #10 at the time with the Royals receiving votes in the USCHO.com poll and the rankings were reversed in the latest poll with the Royals ranked #10 and Concordia receiving votes.
