EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The two hour trip east to Eau Claire did little to cool the Bethel University women's hockey team off as they scored four more goals Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 victory to complete the season opening series sweep over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Cristina Masten, as she did Friday night in Bethel's 7-0 victory, scored the first and last goals for the Royals. Masten scored five goals in the two games against the Blugolds. After dishing out four assists Friday night senior
Biz Huss got in on the scoring action with her first goal of the season. She also recorded another assist in the game.
Lindsay Burman scored the other goal for the Royals, her second of the year.
“We played a solid game throughout,” Royals coach
Brian Carlson said. “We continued to capitalize on scoring chances.”
The Royals outshot the Blugolds, 26-23. In the series Bethel took just four more shots than UW-Eau Claire, but outscored them 11-1. Freshman
Erika Allen made her collegiate debut in goal for the Royals and made 22 saves. The Blugolds lone goal came seven minutes into the third period with the Royals up 3-0.
“We again got solid goaltending and we had good puck movement from our defenseman,” Carlson said.
Masten's first goal was the lone tally of the first period when she scored at the 17:45 mark. Huss scored just three minutes into the second period on an assist from Burman. The Royals third goal came from Burman on the power play as she was assisted by Huss and freshman
Caroline Kivisto. Masten's final goal came ten minutes into the third period to put the finishing touches on the Royals sweep.
Several Royals had impressive offensive outputs in the two games against the Blugolds.
Biz Huss scored a team and MIAC leading six points (one goal, five assists) while three Royals scored five points; Masten (five goals), Kivisto (three goals, two assists) and Burman (two goals, three assists). Royals goalies
Jess Newstrom and
Erika Allen stopped 47 of the 48 shots they faced.
