NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Bethel Royals squad moved their conference record to 4-4 Tuesday afternoon at Carleton College after defeating the Knights 6-3 and 11-1. The much needed conference doubleheader sweep now moves the Royals to 13-9 on the season and pushes them up the MIAC standings.
Playing at Mel Traube Field on the illustrious Carleton College campus, the Royals top half of the order gave the Knights fits throughout the course of the first game. Despite falling behind early, the Royals fought back and claimed a 4-3 lead, thanks to 2 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings in the game. An
Erik Anderson double to left field would score
Jay Slick and
Travis Piepho. RBI singles from
David Freed and Slick would attribute for the 2 runs in the 4th, when
Buddy Flaherty and Freed would score.
The Royals added 2 runs of insurance in the top of the 7th to bump their lead to 6-3. With the bases juiced,
Mike Sedjo was hit by a pitch to account for an RBI. An untimely wild pitch that would score Anderson, signaled the 6th and final run for the Royals in game one.
Matt Johnson had another quality start for the Royals, pitching 5.2 innings scattering 9 hits and allowing 2 earned runs. Johnson only allowed 1 free pass and struck out 3. With the win, Johnson improved his record to 3-0 on the season.
Chris Dent would come into close out the final 1.1 innings to earn the save.
Bethel found it's offensive stroke in the second game, as they put up 11 runs on Carleton's home turf. The game was all Royals at the dish and on the mound, with
David Freed pitching 5 innings while allowing 1 run which was unearned. Freed also moved his record to 3-0 on the season.
Buddy Flaherty and
Chris Dent combined for 2 shutout innings in relief to seal the deal for the Royals victory.
Travis Piepho finished the game 2-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Jay Slick was 2-4 with 4 RBI. And
Jesse Nickols was 2-4 as well with an RBI to help aid the Royals victory.
The Royals will now be off a few days, but return to action Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup when they take on Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
