Royals Rebound in 5-3 Win Over Concordia

After 5-3 loss Friday, Bethel returned the favor to Cobbers Saturday

BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team mustered its second Saturday win in the last two Saturday's with a 5-3 win over Concordia Saturday afternoon at Bethel University Arena in the National Sports Center. The Royals bounced back from a 5-3 loss Friday night to the Cobbers and managed its own 5-3 victory on game two of the two-day double-header.

Each team tallied goals in the first and second period, but the Royals were in no mood to continue the goal exchance in the third, as Bethel held the 3-1 goal advantage in the final frame. After Concordia took the 1-0 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first period Cristina Masten (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.) continued her goal streak by recording her sixth goal of the year with less than 40 seconds to play in the first. Masten's goal came from Kalie Johnson (Fr., Richfield, Minn.) and Rachael Geng (Sr., South Saint Paul, Minn.), who each recorded their fourth and fifth assist, respectively.

Bethel started the second almost as quickly as it ended the first when Kalie Johnson scored her third goal of the year two minutes in on a power play in favor of BU. Madison Gendreau leaked a goal past Royal goalie Sophie Borgerding (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) with eight minutes to play in the second, evening the score at two a-piece.

Senior Anna Carlson (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) tallied her first and the eventual game-winning goal two minutes into the third period on a Charise Kendrick (So., Scandia, Minn.) pass. Masten followed up Carlson's first goal with her seventh of the season three minutes later, giving the Royals its first two-goal advantage since its opener against UW-Eau Claire.

The Cobbers attempted to even the game with a goal at the 15-minute mark, however, Rachael Geng and the Royal attack quickly halted any Concordia effort with BU's final goal of the competition, which finished the game 5-3 in advantage of Bethel.

Bethel did an exceptional job capitalizing on power play opportunities, as the Royals scored three of its goals on power plays. As a team BU finished with 29 slap shots, led by Biz Huss (Jr., Beaver Bay, Minn.), who recorded three. Five other Bethel skaters tallied two shots, while four added one.

With the win the Royals improve to 2-3-2 on the season and will look to build momentum after taking a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday next week.
