Buffalo, Minn. - The Bethel University Women's Hockey team played in the Minnesota Showcase this weekend and faced the College of Saint Benedict's Blazers, as well as the the College of Saint Scholastica's Saints. The ladies finished their first weekend back from Christmas break with a 3-1 loss against the Blazers and a 3-2 overtime victory against the Saints. This attributes them with an overall record of 6-6-1 (.500).
On Friday, (January 7th, 2011) the Royals were placed against the odds as the College of St. Benedict increased their lead by 1 in the first, then 2 in the second. Going into the third period, and down 2-0, the Royals needed to grasp possession of the puck. At 5:39 into the third, Christina Masten hit one home from
Biz Huss and
Allison Papko. With a score of 2-1, the Royals pulled goalie,
Jess Newstrom and attempted scoring with an extra attacker. However, their efforts failed as the Blazers put one in on the empty net and sealed the win with a 3-1 victory over the Royals.

On Saturday, (January 8th, 2011) the Women's Hockey team fought against St. Scholastica's Saints. The game began to mirror the previous night's events as the Saints scored 2 goals in the first. The Royals were determined not to let their opponents bury them with a quick start and a persevering mindset lead to an answer when
Kate Wahlin scored at 5:19 into the second, from
Rachael Geng. It was 28 seconds later when
Anna Carlson put one away from
Kate Wahlin and Charise Kendrik.
With the game tied at 2-2 and regulation time over, the Royals went against the Saints in a 5:00 overtime period. St. Scholastica had an unfortunate tripping penalty just 24 seconds into the OT which lead to an overtime goal by Christina Masten from
Anna Carlson and
Allison Papko.
The Royals resume their MIAC conference play on January 21st against Saint Mary's University. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. in the Bethel University Arena (Blaine, Minn.)
