DULUTH, Minn. - The Bethel University Men's Hockey team, returning from a long Christmas break, went on the road to take one the Saint Scholastica Saints and the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets.  Although both games were hard fought, the Royals fell to the opposing teams in non-conference bouts, giving the Royals an overall record of 3-10-2.

Friday's game against St. Scholastica, at the Mars Lakeview Arena, yielded a score of 3-2 as the Royals were slow to start.  A combination of being outshot 17-6 and being outscored 2-0 near the end of the first period put Bethel University in a tough place.  However, with 31 seconds left in the first period, Chris Fiala managed to put one past Saints' goaltender, Patrick Sullivan, with the assist going to Jake Calleja.

There was no scoring in the second period as game-play seemed even between the teams but by the third period, St. Scholastica was able to put the puck in the net, given the man advantage.  It was only 11 seconds later that Jack Paul hit the net from Christian Fogerty, putting the Royals within one.  The Saints held strong against the last efforts of Bethel and clinched the 'W'.

The following day, (Saturday, January 8th) the Royals took on the ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets.  The Royals played evenly with the Yellowjackets and ended the game with 32 shots against UW-Superior's 34 shots.  However, the scoring was one-sided. 

The Yellowjackets were able to put four past Michael Sperl in the second period, before Josh Simi was able to answer, from Josh Shingler and Garrett Windle.  Yet, the deficit seemed to great and the Royals played through the third without narrowing the gap.  The game ended in a 5-1 loss for the Royals.


The Bethel University Men's Hockey team returns to conference play on January 14, 2011 against Hamline University.  This will be their first home game of the New Year at Bethel University.  Join Us.  The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
