ST. PAUL, Minn. - After winning nine of their last 11 games, including four conference games in a row, the Bethel Royals headed into their doubleheader with Macalester with full sails. But on a breezy Saturday afternoon, the Scots took some of Bethel's wind away by defeating the Royals 6-4 and 17-9.
Like they had done in their previous five games, the Royals took an early lead by scoring three runs in the first two innings. National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Hitter of the Week
Jay Slick (So., River Falls, Wis.) hit an RBI double in the first inning, followed by
Tim Churchill (Sr., Mt. Prospect, Ill.) hitting an RBI triple and scoring on a wild pitch in the second inning to help Bethel get it's 3-0 lead.
However, the Scots came back with five runs in the fourth inning to steal Bethel's thunder. The Royals were never able to recapture the lead, despite scoring a run in the top of the seventh and having two runners in scoring position with one out.
Tim Oesterlin (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) led the Royals at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double, run, and RBI.
Matt Rowley (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief on the hill.
In contrast to many Bethel games of late, the second game got away from the Royals in a hurry. Macalester put up five runs in the first two innings, and then posted 11 runs in the fourth inning alone.
Not to be outdone, the Royals countered with nine runs in the top of the sixth inning, thanks in part to three-run home runs by both
Bob Tokar (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) and
Jay Slick. However, the damage had already been done and the Royals succumbed to the Scots by a final score of 17-9.
The losses set the Royals back to 6-10 in conference play and 18-16 overall, while the Scots improved to 6-10 in the MIAC and 19-15-1 overall. The Royals are scheduled to return to the comfort of Hargis Park for their last home games of the season on Wednesday, May 5, against Carleton beginning at 2:30 p.m.
