ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Bethel entered today's home conference doubleheader against Augsburg looking to gain some momentum in MIAC play but was denied, losing 12-7 and 3-1.
In game one, the Royals fell behind early due to hot-hitting from the Auggie offense. The Royals responded to an 8-2 deficit with a five-run sixth inning to pull within one run. After a
Bob Tokar (Sr., Elk River, Minn.) home run was ruled foul,
Sean Flaherty (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) responded with a three-run home run to right-center field.
John Slick (Sr., River Falls, Wis.) and
Tim Churchill (Sr., Mt. Prospect, Ill.) both recorded RBIs to bring the Royals back into contention. However, the fireworks were too little-too late as Augsburg put four more runs up on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
In game two, Bethel jumped ahead in the bottom of the second inning thanks to Tokar's RBI single.
David Freed (Fr., North Oaks, Minn.) held the Augsburg offense hitless for the first three innings before yielding three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Matt Rowley (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) came on in relief and provided two scoreless innings. The Royals were unable to crack the scoreboard again, losing 3-1.
The losses drop Bethel to 9-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Augsburg improves to 11-11 and 4-0 in the MIAC. The Royals look to rebound against St. Thomas as they host the Tommies this Saturday at Hargis Park. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
