FRIDLEY, Minn. - For the first time since the 2006 season, St. Thomas got the better of Bethel in a regular season match as the Royals fell to the Tommies 6-3.
Bethel had a lot of ground to make up after getting swept in doubles competition, though
Tom Ronning (Sr., Alexandria, Minn.) and
Kent Nichols (So., Zimmerman, Minn.) pushed their doubles match to 8-9, only to come up short 4-7 in a playoff.
The Royals were able to win three singles matches as
Joel Cassens (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.),
Tucker Morris (Fr., Arden Hills, Minn.), and
Jordan LeFebvre (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) all defeated their opponents, with Morris and LeFebvre going to a tiebreaker set. Ronning also went to a tiebreaker set with his cross-court rival, only to lose 7-10.
"We played a great match with an 'on fire' team," said Head Coach Dan Morton. "It really could have gone either way, but this time St. Thomas made fewer errors."
With the loss, Bethel drops to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, while St. Thomas improves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Royals are scheduled to remain idle until they pack up and head to the Orlando, Florida, area for several matches during spring break.
