EAU CLAIRE, Wis - The Bethel Women's Hockey team played the University of Wisconsin BluGolds last night (Nov. 16). The Royals lead the game 2 -1 for about 28 minutes until UW-Eau Claire answered with a goal, late in the 3rd period. The overtime was hard fought, but Bethel was down one player when the BluGolds finished just 12 seconds from the overtime buzzer. This puts the Bethel Women's team at a record of (3-1-1) as they head into a game versus Gustavus Adolphus College.
The 1st period was a silent one as Bethel racked up only 3 shots and UW-Eau Claire only ripped 6. Failing to convert on 2 power plays, the women's hockey team went into the locker room frustrated, yet determined.
They came out in the 2nd period with a higher tempo and a more aggressive style. Yet it was the BluGolds who put one away first, scoring 9 minutes into the period. The Royals did not give up and put up 4 times as many shots as in the 1st resulting in a game tying goal by
Charise Kendrick with just 1 second left in the period.
The Royals were determined to take the game into their own hands. That's when
Sarah Kartak scored her third goal of the season with 8 minutes left in the game. It was in the last minute that UW Eau Claire pulled their goalie and scored with the extra attacker to make the score even with 47 second left to play. Overtime ensued and the Royals were plagued with a penalty being called with just 45 seconds left, the BluGolds took advantage of their only power play by scoring the game winner with just 12 seconds.
The Royals remained in high spirits as they battled a tough team, losing on a tough call, and playing tough until the end. Join the Women's team as they take on the Gusties on Saturday, November 20th at 4:00 p.m. in the Bethel University Arena.
