ST. PAUL, Minn. - Two gutsy pitching performances by Bethel hurlers were not enough to prolong the Royals season as they fell victim to the Macalester Scots today.
Kyle McCracken (Jr., Johnston, Iowa) pitched six strong innings in a complete game effort. He kept Bethel in the game by striking out six batters and not walking any, but the Royals were unable to answer the three runs allowed.
In game two,
Ben Turnwall (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.), a pitcher used primarily as the closer, started and threw 4 2/3 innings before
Chris Dent (So., Marietta, Ohio) came on to finish out the bottom of the fifth inning. Turnwall struck out seven batters and walked two while being charged for five runs.
Bethel scored both its runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
Kirk Darling (So., Kalamazoo, Mich.) led off the inning with a triple and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by
Bob Tokar (Jr., Elk River, Minn.). Later,
Mark Therrien (Jr., Spring Lake Park, Minn.) reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third after a pair of wild pitches. He came in to score when a ball hit by
Bjorn Anderson (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) was misplayed, allowing Anderson to reach as well.
The Royals finish the 2009 campaign at 19-19 overall and 10-10 in MIAC play. Bethel was also 6-6 at home, 4-4 on the road, and 9-9 at neutral sites.
