Game 2 Box Score
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Extra innings have not been kind to the Bethel Royals, and such was the case again today as the Augsburg Auggies defeated the Royals in the bottom of the eighth inning by a score of 2-1. The Royals have now played three extra inning games in their past four series. In the first game, Augsburg got past Bethel 6-0.
The Auggies scored three of their six runs in the first inning against starting pitcher
Travis Adams (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn.), who had his streak of 27 1/3 scoreless innings pitched snapped almost immediately with three consecutive singles, a fielding error, and another base hit.
The Royals were unable to answer any of Augsburgs runs in the first game, making it the first time they have been held scoreless by a collegiate team since March 21, 2008 - a span of 58 games.
Adams pitched five innings and gave up six runs on seven hits. True to form, he did not walk anyone and struck out six, giving him a strikeout to walk ratio of 12-to-1 in conference play.
In game two, Bethel manufactured a run in the top of third inning when
Ryan Doheny (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) singled up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on a base hit by
Tim Churchill (Jr., Mt. Prospect, Ill.), and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Tim Oesterlin (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Royals.
Doheny scored the winning run the day before in Bethel's second game against Northwestern, and for a while, it looked like he would do it again as starting pitcher
Chris Harrell (So., Minnetrista, Minn.) was shutting down the Augsburg offensive attack. Harrell pitched himself out of a couple of jams thanks to some great fielding plays and had a shutout going through five innings before the Auggies scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. Augsburg scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wet newspaper double followed by a single three batters later.
Bethel's two losses drops their record to 15-15 overall and 6-6 in the MIAC, while Augsburg improves to 15-15 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The Royals are scheduled to return to Hargis Park this coming Saturday to take on Saint Mary's in a conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
*Note - though today's games were played at the home field of the Royals, they were considered Augsburg's home games as scheduling difficulties prevented the Auggies from using the venue they normally use as their home field.
