WHITEWATER, Wis. - Four matches into the season with an almost entirely new lineup compared to a year ago, the Royals pulled together and held off Wheaton College of Wheaton, Ill., 3-1 in four very tight sets.
Three of the four sets extended beyond 25 points, while the other was decided by just three points. After a heartbreaking loss in set one, 25-27, the Royals swept the next three sets 27-25, 25-22, and 28-26.
Three different Royals had double-digit kill totals in the match.
Kelly Otto (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) led the charge with 23, as well as a solo block and two block assists for a total of 25 points. Captains
Jennifer Stoa (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and
Chelsea Falck (Sr., DeForest, Wis.) each had 14 kills, two service aces, and two block assists to earn 17 points apiece.
The match helped the Royals even their record at 2-2 and finish their play at the UW-Whitewater hosted tournament on a winning note. Wheaton fell to 0-4 with the loss. Bethel will continue their season by playing in another tournament hosted by a University of Wisconsin school next weekend as they travel to UW-River Falls. There, they are scheduled to take on Buena Vista University beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5.
