WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Royals continued their play in a tournament hosted by UW-Whitewater and emerged victorious over Central College of Pella, Iowa, 3-1. Central is ranked #22 in the nation according to the CBS College Sports Network/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III preseason poll.
Despite a 21-25 setback in the first match, the Royals rebounded by winning the next three matches 25-17, 25-22, and 25-21.
Kelly Otto (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) led the way for the Royals with 18 kills, while
Jennifer Stoa (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had nine kills, two blocks, and a service ace to earn 12 points.
Not only was it the first victory of the season for the Royals, but it marked the first time
Gretchen Hunt has defeated her alma mater since taking over head coach responsibilities at Bethel in 2001. Hunt played for Central from 1993-96 and was on two NCAA tournament teams.
Bethel is now 1-1 after their first full day of competition, while Central drops to 0-1. The Royals will continue their play in the UW-Whitewater tournament by taking on Alma College tomorrow at 9 a.m.
