Box Score
BLAINE, Minn. - Five different Royals scored, including
Kelsea Martalock (Fr., Tomah, Wis.) who scored her first two collegiate goals in Bethel's 6-3 win over visiting Saint Mary's. The win, along with last night's 3-0 shut out of the Cardinals, gives Bethel their first conference sweep of the season.
Bethel capitalized on two of their four power play opportunities and even scored a shorthanded goal, thanks to some aggressive play by
Sandra Felten (Jr., Cashton, Wis.) and
Bethany Murphy-Aultman (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.).
The Royals got on the board first when
Hannah Carlson scored just 39 seconds into the game with the help of Martalock and
Misty Pirus (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill.). Martalock then knocked in a goal of her own, her first of the night and of her career, at the 7:53 mark of the first period while the Royals were on a power play.
Saint Mary's came back to cut Bethel's lead in half when Ingrid Klockars scored just three minutes after Martalock's goal. The Cardinals then went on to tie the game at 2-2 just over eight minutes into the second period. Leading scorer Amy Zimniewicz netted her fifth goal of the season with the help of Katie Cachey and Lexi Bohlinger.
After that, it was almost all Bethel.
Kassy Sullivan (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) scored her sixth goal of the season just past the midway point of the period, unassisted, by rebounding a shot and going to the top shelf on Cardinal goalie Brittany Lemke. With her goal, Sullivan continues to be one of the top 10 scoring freshmen in the MIAC.
Less than two minutes later, Felten scored her third goal of the series, and Bethel's first shorthanded goal of the season. Bethel's all-time leading scorer,
Bethany Murphy-Aultman, picked up the assist.
Little more than three minutes later, the Royals struck again. This time it was captain
Amy Beitzel (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) who scored off a rebound, unassisted, to make the score 5-2. Martalock rounded out Bethel's scoring by adding her second goal of the game and season with just over a minute to play in the second period. The tandem of Felten and Murphy-Aultman once again helped account for the goal.
Saint Mary's was able to score once more in the third when Jamie Henneman netted a goal 1:32 into the period.
Bethel is now 9-10-1 overall and 6-8 in the MIAC, which means they have surpassed their conference win total from last season. Saint Mary's drops to 5-12-2 overall and 5-8-1 in conference play. The Royals have now won three of their last four games heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. They will face off against St. Olaf next Friday in Northfield at 7 p.m. for their next game.
