WINONA, Minn. - Sandra Felten (Jr., Cashton, Wis.) scored two of her team and conference leading 14 goals tonight, lifting Bethel to a 3-0 win over host Saint Mary's.
After a scoreless first period, the Royals got the break they needed when a Cardinal penalty gave them a power play opportunity. Felten made it count by scoring at the 12:10 mark of the second period with the help of Bethany Murphy-Aultman (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and Kelsea Martalock (Fr., Tomah, Wis.). The goal would ultimately prove to be the game winner, Felten's fifth of the season, which also leads the conference.
With just 22 seconds remaining in the second period, Kassy Sullivan scored her fifth goal of the season, assisted by Murphy-Aultman, to make it 2-0 heading into the third period.
Felten sealed the victory with her second goal of the evening, scoring 12:31 into the period, assisted once more by Bethel's all-time leading point scorer, Murphy-Aultman.
The Royals were outshot 38-30 on the evening, but nothing got past two-time All-MIAC goalie Beth Spurrier as she recorded her second shutout of the season and 11th of her career.
Bethel improves to 8-10-1 overall and 5-8 in the MIAC, matching their conference win total from last season, and putting them in a three way tie for the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot. Saint Mary's falls to 5-11-2 overall and 5-7-1 in the conference. They remain just one point ahead of the Royals in the standings. The same two teams will face off against each other tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Bethel University Arena in Blaine, Minn.
