WINONA, Minn. - Desperately needing a win, the Royals got one by defeating Saint Mary's 78-61 on the road today.
After a rocky start, Bethel took the lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half and led the rest of the way.
Tim Madson (Jr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) stayed on par with his season average by scoring 23 points.
Mike Much (So., Champlin, Minn.) turned out a season high 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the floor.
Mike Moberg finished the night with his eighth double-double of the season scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Cardinals were led by freshman Will Wright with 17 points, which is also equal to his season average. Wright is Saint Mary's top scorer and is one of the leading scorers in the conference. Eric Lear and Lukas Holland finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The win moves them to 9-9 in the MIAC and 13-10 overall. Bethel's playoff hopes are still alive as they currently sit just one-half game behind St. Olaf for the sixth and final playoff spot with two games left to play. The Oles upset the Gustavus Gusties today to maintain their lead over the Royals in the standings. The Cardinals drop to 2-16 in the MIAC and 2-21 overall. Bethel will take on Macalester next Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. for their next game. The game will be played at St. Catherine's facilities as the Scots wait for their new gym to be completed.
