SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The Macalester Scots thought that they had control of the game, leading for a majority of the first half, but the Royals made their move late in those first 20 minutes and took control the rest of game by defeating the Scots 73-50 in the brand new Leonard Center.
Going into the second half Bethel led Macalester by 12 and slowly began to open the game up. In the last four minutes of the game, the Royals put a stop to the Scots offense, not allowing them anymore points for the rest of the game and extending their lead to 23 points.
Six-foot nine-inch center,
Mike Moberg (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds, which was his third double-double of the season. Close behind him was
Chris Vavra ( Jr., Cambridge, Minn.) who had 13 points off the bench, nine of which were from beyond the three point arc. The rest of the scoring was spread evenly between the team in the game, three players with eight points for the game, including
Tim Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.), who had not scored less than 10 points in a game since his freshman season.
The Scots had a great deal of their points coming from Kyle Hamblett, who had 18, and Colin Keeley with 13 points in the game.
As a team the Royals shot 44 percent from the field and an impressive 87.5 percent from the free throw line, making 14 of their 16 shots.
The win boosts Bethel's record to 2-1 in the MIAC and 6-1 overall, while Macalester falls to 0-3 in the MIAC and 0-7 overall. The Royals now look to their next game which is scheduled for Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. in Minneapolis against North Central.
