Bethel defeats Saint Mary's 78-62 for first conference win

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.
- Tim Madson (Sr., Redwood Falls, Minn.) scored 20 points and had five rebounds in his 36 minutes of play to lead the Bethel Royals to a 78-62 win over the visiting Saint Mary's Cardinals.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first seven minutes of the ball game before Bethel finally begain pulling away and led for the rest of the game. The Royals made nearly 50 percent of their shots from the floor and were a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line in the win. Saint Mary's shot just 35 percent while making only 62 percent of their free throws.

The Royals got some strong play off the bench from both Tyler Brown (Jr., Chaska, Minn.) and Chris Vavra (Jr., Cambridge, Minn.) as the two scored 15 and 13 points, respectively. Brown missed just two shots all game, while Vavra was three-for-six from behind the three point arc.

Josh Knights led the Cardinals with 23 points and nine rebounds. Will Wright chipped in 14 points as well.

The victory is Bethel's first in conference play giving them an overall record of 5-1 and a MIAC record of 1-1. Saint Mary's falls to  2-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference as well. The Royals are scheduled to take on Macalester at the brand new Leonard Center next Monday night at 7:30 p.m. for their next game.
