Box Score
ST. PETER, Minn. - In the standings, a tie is only worth one point, whereas a win is worth two. However, that one point is so much better than the zero points earned in a loss. All that said, for the first time in 19 meetings the Bethel Royals finally earned their first point against the #6 Gustavus Gusties by tying them 1-1.
All the game scoring took place in the first period tonight at the Don Roberts Ice Rink. Bethel's
Olivia Paulseth (Fr., Duluth, Minn.) lit the lamp just under seven minutes into the first period with the help of
Sandra Felten (Sr., Cashton, Wis.), making the score 1-0 in favor of the Royals.
However, Bethel's lead did not last more than three minutes. At 9:44 into the first period, Alyssa Gaulrapp evened the score on a power play, assisted by Jenny Pusch. Fortunately, Bethel's defense was able to ward off any further goals including three other Gustie power play opportunities.
From that point on, it was a defensive battle that resulted in the tie. Much like in years past, Gustavus out-shot the Royals by a significant margin - tonight it was 31-13. Three-time All-MIAC goalie
Beth Spurrier (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) saved progressively more shots each period to finish with a grand total of 30.
The tie moves Bethel to 3-1-1 in conference play and 3-4-1 overall, while Gustavus is now 5-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the MIAC. The two teams are schedule to face off against each other again tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. at Bethel University Arena in Blaine, Minn.
