BLAINE, Minn. - An overtime goal by David Martinson of Gustavus Adolphus, one of the MIAC's leading goal-scorers, downed Bethel 2-1 tonight before a full house at Bethel University Arena.
The Gustavus Gusties and Bethel Royals played a very defensive battle for the entire 63:16 of game time with the Gusties out-shooting Bethel by a more than 2:1 ratio. The two teams skated to a scoreless tie in the first period and the defensive battle raged on until 10:17 into the second period. At that point, skating with a 4-3 advantage thanks to two Gusties in the penalty box,
Mason Swenson (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) put the Royals up 1-0 when he scored with the help of
Brad Peterson (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.).
However, the lead would not last. With just over two minutes remaining in the second period, James Leathers took a hard slapshot from just inside the blue line that trickled into the net for a Gustie goal. Eric Bigham and Joe Welch were credited with the assist on the game-tying goal.
A scoreless third period forced overtime, and with just 1:58 remaining, Bethel was penalized for having two many men on the ice. As a result, Gustavus went on the power play and scored to end the game. Ross Ring-Jarvi and Mitch Carlson were credited with assists on the game-winning goal.
The loss sets Bethel back to 5-4-1 overall and 2-3 in conference play while Gustavus improves to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the MIAC. The two teams are scheduled to face off against each other again tomorrow night beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn.
