ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - The Bethel Royals and Saint Mary's Cardinals squared off against each other in the final game of the 2008 season for both teams. Despite taking a 1-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game, the Cardinals were able to tie the game at 1-1 late in the second half, and then eventually win it in overtime by a score of 2-1.
Dan Slegh (Sr., Andover, Minn.), playing in his last game at Bethel, scored the first goal of the game with the help of
Matt Polding (Sr., Waconia, Minn.), who also finished his collegiate playing career today.
However, Andy Adair of Saint Mary's took it upon himself to score the last two goals of the game - the first was unassisted, the game-winner was assisted by Bobby Gas - to give the Cardinals the win.
Goalie
Nick Kantor (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) made five saves, and will finish second in the MIAC for saves this season behind counterpart Jon Szafranski of Saint Mary's, who made six saves today.
Despite the loss, Bethel finished the season with more wins than last season, scoring nearly twice as many goals as in 2007. The Royals finish 2008 with an overall record of 5-13, and a conference record of 1-9. Meanwhile, Saint Mary's completes their season with a 4-13-1 overall record, and a 2-7-1 MIAC record. Bethel will lose seniors Slegh and Polding to graduation, as well as
Jesse Erickson (Oak Grove, Minn.),
Josh Miller (Maple Grove, Minn.) and
Randon Sommars (Cambridge, Minn.).
