Box Score
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Last Saturday,
Charli Sorensen (Sr., Park Ridge, Ill.) entered Bethel's game against Gustavus Adolphus needing just four saves to set the school record. At the end of the game, she had three saves, leaving her tied with Jennie Pulford, who played from 2001-04. Today, the inevitable happened as Sorensen, who did not record a save against Presentation on Wednesday, surpassed the record and then some by making 19 saves in a double-overtime 0-0 tie against Augsburg.
It was only fitting that her record-setting performance ended in a shutout, her third of the season. She achieved the feat at the 38:57 mark of the first half in front of a home crowd of 174 bundled up fans at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex, as today marked the first home game for the Royals in more than a month. Sorensen's name is already firmly etched in the Bethel record book, holding the most career shutouts with 15, counting today's performance. She also holds the record for shutouts in a season with six in 2006.
As the score might suggest, defense was the name of the game with the two teams struggling all 110 mintues for ball control and open shots. The Royals managed just six shots on goal - two each by
Kristin Kishaba (Sr., Eau Claire, Wis.),
Esther Sowles (Sr., Waconia, Minn.), and
Sophie Christiansen (Fr., Portland, Ore.). There were only 10 corner kicks in the game between the two teams, with Bethel making three of them.
With the tie, Bethel earns another point in the conference standings and their record moves to 7-6-2 overall, while holding a 1-6-2 record in the MIAC. Augsburg remains undefeated in conference play with a 4-0-4 record, and has an 8-2-4 record overall. The two teams played to a 0-0 two-overtime draw three years ago in 2005 as well. The Royals are scheduled to put their perfect 4-0 record against Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) teams on the line when they take on Martin Luther College next Tuesday at 1 p.m. in New Ulm, Minn.
