ST. PAUL, Minn. - For the second time in three games, the Royals went into overtime against a conference opponent. Earlier this week, Bethel set a new school single game scoring record in their 99-92 win over Ausgburg. Unfortunately, Bethel came up short in this game as they were defeated by Hamline 71-68 on a last second three-point shot by Britta Schwartzhoff.
The two teams played evenly with each other the entire game, as they were tied 27-27 at halftime, and 64-64 at the end of regulation. There were 17 ties during the game, and had it not been for Schwartzhoff's buzzer-beater, the two teams would have been forced to play another overtime period.
The Royals forced the Pipers to turn the ball over 30 times in the 45 minutes, but were out rebounded 52-35.
Annegret Nautsch (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Nautsch also had two blocks, giving her 66 on the season.
Kiersten Hansen (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) led Bethel scorers for the second game in a row with 16 points. Gabriella Gustafson (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) and
Erica Hormig (So., Windom, Minn.) also posted double figure scoring with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Mary Wilkowski led the Pipers with 12 points and three assists. Schwartzhoff finished the afternoon with 10 points, including the last second, game-winning shot.
As a result of today's game, the two teams split the season series 1-1, and hold the same conference and overall records at 6-7 and 9-7, respectively. The Royals will stay on the road for their next game, as they travel to St. Peter to take on Gustavus at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday night.
