MEQUON, Wis. - The Royals got back on the winning track this afternoon by defeating a winless Concordia-Wisconsin team 5-2 on the road.
The Falcons women's hockey team is in their inaugural season and has only managed to tie two opponents, including Bethel in the Royals second game of the season.
Bethel welcomed
Bethany Murphy-Aultman (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) and
Anna Baumgarten (Jr., Elmhurst, Ill.) back to the lineup after the two missed last Saturday's game against UW-River Falls. Murphy-Aultman and
Sandra Felten (Jr., Cashton, Wis.) both scored twice and each had an assist to give them three points in the game. The two are tied for the team lead in points with 14 apiece this season, and they are both climbing Bethel's all-time leading scorer board. With 60 career points, Murphy-Aultman is just six points shy of becoming the school's leading scorer, and Felten is just five points behind her as the two rank third and fourth in team history, respectively. Murphy-Aultman already holds the school record for assists with 33, including today's game.
Concordia-Wisconsin got on the board first when Jackie Drew scored just 2:50 into the game. The Royals struck back toward the end of the first period when Felten found the back of the net with the help of Murphy-Aultman.
Just under five minutes into the second period, it was time for Felten to return the favor as she assisted Murphy-Aultman to help the Royals take the lead. Less than two and a half minutes later, Felten scored her second goal of the game, unassisted, making it 3-1 in favor of the Royals. The goal would prove to be the winning goal, Felten's third of the season and seventh of her career.
The Falcons were able to cut Bethel's lead to one when Leah Shapiro scored 4:52 into the third period, but Baumgarten put the Royals back up by two by scoring her first goal of the season nearly a minute and a half later. Murphy-Aultman sealed the victory by scoring her second goal of the game with one second remaining.
Julien Olson (Sr., Minneapolis) notched her seventh assist of the season on the goal, giving her 11 points total.
The win helps Bethel pull back to .500 at 5-5-1 overall while Concordia-Wisconsin is left to continue trying for their first win in school history. They are now 0-10-2 overall. The Royals will stay on the road and head down to the Chicago area to take on Lake Forest tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
