ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Down 3-0 at halftime against conference rival Hamline, the members of Bethel University women's soccer team were frustrated. The team had recently lost 3-2 in two overtimes to Central College, and were now playing catch-up against the only team they had been ranked above in the conference preseason poll.
Something needed to change - and it did. Bethel used four second half goals to upend Hamline 4-3 at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex in their conference opener.
Hamline's scoring came in the first half when Ann Donner scored her ninth goal of the year on a pass from Allison Brisson. Donner had previously scored seven goals in the Pipers last two games. Brisson added a goal of her own, as did Anna McMahon.
The Royals were not without their scoring opportunities early on. Bethel had eight shots on goal to the Pipers nine – but a strong performance from GK Laura Triplett kept them from finding the back of the net.
It wasn't until 60:02 into the game that senior midfielder and team leading scorer Jessie Tschetter (Sioux Falls, SD) put the Royals on the scoreboard with the help of sophomore midfielder Katelynn Hains (Prior Lake, MN). The goal marked the beginning of a momentum shift, as the team proceeded to score three more goals in a span of 26 minutes. Bethel's ball control, teamed with solid goalkeeping from junior Charli Sorensen (Park Ridge, IL), allowed the Royals to out-shoot the Pipers 18-9 in the second half.
Tschetter added another goal and an assist, while junior Esther Sowles (Waconia, MN) knocked in the other two goals for Bethel, giving her 3 on the year.
The win gives Bethel a 1-0-0 MIAC record, and evens them at 2-2-0 overall. Hamline drops to 0-2-0 in MIAC play, and 3-2-0 overall. The Royals next game will be in Decorah, Iowa, to take on Luther College this Thursday.
