April 14, 2007

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

ARDEN HILLS, Minn.
- The Royals played two against Carleton on Saturday leaving all their scoring for the second game. The Knights came to Hargis Park with a 0-2 MIAC record and grabbed one to improve their record to 1-3.

In the first game the Knights came out swinging and tallied six runs off of 16 hits to beat the host Royals 6-2. Carleton scored in the second on a single by Nick Shepard and in the third on a sacrifice fly by Rob Trettin. Bethel's Dana Hegman scored on a single by Mike Gaustad in the fourth to bring the score 2-1. The Knights would respond by scoring two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to push the score to 6-1. In the seventh the Royals' Jared Bangs would score on a double by Brandon Carr, but it would be the only run they could produce in the inning as the team fell. The box score would not show it, but the Royals hit the ball hard all game and just could not find a hole.

Dan Matthews would hold Bethel to six hits in seven innings while giving up two runs and improving to 2-0. Isaac Hamilton took the loss for the Royals and moved to 4-2. Brandon Carr would go 2-3 with an RBI and Tyler Kramer went 2-4 in the first game.

The second game was another story for the Royal offense as they went a combined 13-30 and scored 16 runs. The Royals came alive the first inning scoring 10 runs. Kirby Carr had two hits and five RBI after bombing a grand slam in his second at-bat of the inning. Bethel would almost bat around twice in the inning as they forced Knight pitcher Doug Sylvester out before the end of the first. The next runs for the Royals would come in the third when Tim Oesterlin and Ryan Doheny walked and Ted Erickson singled to load the bases. Brandon Carr would hit a grand slam of his own to clear the bases and make the score 14-0. Clint Nelson would score in the fourth and Oesterlin would single in another run for a 16-0 lead. Carleton would score their only run in the fifth after a double and a wild pitch.

Pitching another great game for the Royals was John Buteyn, going four shutout innings, giving up two hits with three strikeouts. He improves to 4-2. Coming in for relief getting one inning a piece was Ben Turnwall, Jake Minks and Kris Pulford. They would hold the Knights to only one run and close out the game 16-1. Sylvester would get the loss to go to 1-1.

The Royals would get many players into the game but before they came out of the game the Carr brothers would combine to go 5-5 with nine RBI's and one grand slam each. Tim Oesterlin also went 3-3 with two RBI's.

Next for the Royals is a make-up game at Concordia to play the Cobbers. Game time is 2:30 on Monday, April 16.
