March 17, 2007

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Bethel University Royals started off their spring trip with a sweep of Clarkson University. While there was still snow on the ground at Hargis Park the Royals came out hot in Port Charlotte. Ryan Doheny started the Royals in the top of the first with a one out double and then was waived around third on Kirby Carr's single up the middle to make it 1-0 Royals.

The game sat there until the Golden Knights crossed the plate in the bottom of the third and then again in the bottom half of the fourth. The Royals struck back in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own. Ted Erickson started the inning with a single and was advanced to second on a fielders' choice and then was doubled in by Brandon Carr. His brother Kirby Carr hit a two out triple to make the game 3-2 which would prove to be enough to lead the Royals to victory. Isaac Hamilton pitched six innings of five hit ball and let in only two runs to improve to 2-1 overall. Mike Gaustad came in for his second save and turned out the Golden Knights to finish the game.

The nightcap started even better for the Royals as they scored six runs in the first inning giving the team the offensive breakout that they have been waiting for. They strung together four hits and two walks after Gaustad was hit by the Knights pitcher. The second inning started just as fast when Kirby Carr doubled and was batted in by Dana Hegman to push the score to 7-0.

The Royals failed to score another run the rest of the game but starting pitcher John Buteyn pitched his second consecutive gem to close the game out. He let up only one run on four hits in his second complete game win of the season. The Royals will continue play on Monday against Millikin University of Illinois at 9 a.m.
