GREEN BAY, Wis.- St. Norbert College advanced to his fourth NCAA Division III Frozen Four in five years following a strong 4-1 win over Bethel University in front of a capacity crowd of 2,025 at Cornerstone Community Center. The Green Knights, 25-3-2 overall, advance to play Oswego State in a national semifinal Saturday in Superior. Bethel ends its season 18-10-1.
Both teams had a scoreless first period, with St. Norbert holding a 14-7 shots advantage in the first 20 minutes. The Green Knights killed off three penalties, while they didn't convert on their one power play chance. Bethel had several good scoring chances in the first period but didn't score.
St. Norbert drew first blood 3:14 into the second period on a Ryan Petersen goal, beating Bethel goalie Aaron Domjanovich near post. Bethel answered at 13:15 of the second period on a 5-on-3 power play goal by Matt Hall, ringing a shot from the point off the post for the score. It didn't take long for St. Norbert to respond when Steven Sleep deflected a Jeff Hazelwood shot on a power play at 16:19 of the second for a 2-1 lead and eventual game-winner. Troy Boisjoli buried a blast from the doorstep just 1:06 later to give the Green Knights a comfortable 3-1 advantage.
The score remained 3-1 until 3:03 remained when Jon Skoog fed Marc Belanger from the left circle to the right slot for the game's final margin. Belanger became the 13th St. Norbert play to score 20 goals in a season with the marker.
Kyle Jones made 17 saves to pick up his 66th career win, tying him with Massachusetts-Dartmouth's Scott Pearsons (1987-90) for third all-time in NCAA Division III history. Jones also moved into sole possession of first for goalie wins in NCHA history.
Domjanovich made 30 saves in 56:57 of work. St. Norbert held a 35-18 shots-on-goal advantage, and was 1-for-3 on the power play. Bethel was 1-for-6 with the extra man.
