ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Warhawks were on the warpath, and Bethel just happened to be in the way. Bethel's fantastic ride of a season came to an abrupt end with their 3-0 loss to #8 UW Whitewater in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
In the showdown between Minnesota and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams (MIAC/WIAC), UW Whitewater held the upper hand for almost the entire afternoon. Both teams featured the Player of the Year for their respective conferences – the MIAC with
Liz Glesne (Sr., Underwood, MN), and the WIAC with Carley Polk.
Bethel came within two points of UW Whitewater in the first game at 22-20, but the Warhawks pulled away by going on a 4-0 run and winning by a score of 30-24.
In the second game, Bethel had a chance to take a 29-27 lead, but scrappy determination on Whitewater's side prevented that from happening, as they went on to win 30-28.
Game three belonged to Whitewater as they held the Royals to a season low of 11 points on their way to the three game sweep.
In terms of points, Glesne outshone Polk by doubling her counterpart's kill total 14-7. However, the #8 ranked Warhawks got 13 kills from Kelly Sorenson and 10 from Abby Shultz to lead them over the Royals.
No other Royal came close to double digit kills, and their hitting percentage was at a season low .078.
Bethel finishes their season 24-9, having reached the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the second time in team history. Glesne finishes her career holding second place in the MIAC with 1,984 kills. UW Whitewater improves to 33-4 overall and advances to take on the winner of the St. Thomas vs. Central (IA) match.
